tanztechnik

dance & performance technologies (dance-tech), is an interdisciplinary practice in which digital and analogue tools are used to mediate dance. more than ‘technological’ scenography and electroacoustic sound scores, dance-tech is an art movement in its own right.

the majority of texts on dance-tech approach the field from a historical perspective situating it within «modernity», or through technological categorisations (web, virtual, telepresence, sensor based etc.).

what these mappings fail to reveal are the divergent, conceptual implementations of performance technologies in dance-tech and dance «modernity» (modern, postmodern, contemporary etc.). we can articulate theses differences as «vectors» and «frames»:

- in dance-tech, dance is the «vector» through which performance technologies are explored, developed and (re)presented as a new arts praxis.

- in dance modernity, performance technologies are used to «frame», extended and re-contexulaise existing dance practices.

although developed in parallel to modernist and post-modern dance, dance-tech has remained at the fringes of mainstream dance praxis.
