365's
365: take one photo, each day for a year. many instances and examples on flickr. the self-portratit version seems the most popular and reflexive, the patterns of (self) representation are, at times revealing.
boris has passed the 200 mark at «dance a day» (although i don’t think they are are filmed on a daily basis anymore).
365’s (and beyond) are hard. that said i would like to see more daily dance documentation, even if short term (say a week or two). both the artist and scholar in me wants to see more process. not such much in pursuit of «process as product» but to see how people are making work.
we could encourage students to document/log their process in bursts. perhaps even as part of the assessment criteria. given that project/process documentation is often a funding requirement should we not be teaching those skills? a blog in which students share the richness of their process has to be better than (fabricated at the last minute) journal tasks.
next time i am teaching a module that has an intensive block of devising/making i will explore some of these ideas. we needs to teach students how to succeed and survive as professional artists. documentation isn’t just about sharing your practice, but reflection and analysis for the purpose of developing your skills.
